Art and Artists St Ives Cornwall

Artists and Galleries St Ives Cornwall

Painting of St Ives Cornwall by Cornish artist Tim Treagust. Visit his Penzance gallery.

For more than a century artists have been coming to Cornwall and producing a great variety of quality art works in and around St Ives Cornwall. Attracted by the magical quality of the light in St Ives and following the building of Brunel's great bridge over the river Tamar painters, sculptures and potters flocked to the quaint fishing village on Cornwall's western peninsula. As you look around St Ives you can see how the beautiful light, cliffs, sea and boats inspired them to produce some magnificent works. Some artists were from St Ives but many were attracted there by the beauty and to join the succession of famous artists who had settled there. There are many artists today painting from St Ives and exhibiting their works around the town. Please use the link for a list of Galleries in St Ives.

As the fishing industry declined the old net lofts above Porthmeor Beach St Ives were transformed into artists studios. Today they continue this tradition and are also home to the St Ives School of Painting. Founded in 1938 by Borlaise Smart one of St Ives leading marine artists and his friend Leonard Fuller the school has recently undergone an extensive renovation programme. Now the stunning refurbished premises of the Porthmeor Studios are home to a number of leading St Ives artists and the school provides a variety of art courses and workshops throughout the year. Early artist visitors to St Ives included leading artists such as Sticker and Whistler in the late 1800s. Many more followed and by the mid 20th Century St Ives had gained a reputation as an international arts centre.

In 1927 marine artist George Fagan Bradshaw formed the now prestigious St Ives Society of Artists. Nestled amongst the quaint streets and rows of traditional fisherman's cottages the Society is housed in a large impressive building situated in the historic Norway Square in the centre of St Ives. There are two galleries - the Main Gallery and below it The Crypt. Each houses regular exhibitions throughout the year. Both are well worth a visit. The standard and quality of art exhibited here is exceptional.

During the second world war Modernism was established in St Ives when Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepwoth moved out of the continually bombed London to a safer environment in St Ives and settled here attracting other artists who followed. Following their ground breaking success St Ives came to be classed as the centre of progressive contemporary European art - taking over from Paris which for a small Cornish village was no small feat!

Today St Ives is still popular with artists and St Ives Society of Art is thriving. They hold regular exhibitions in The Mariners Gallery, The Crypt Gallery and Sloop Pub. Many St Ives artists also have galleries around the town - such as in the Harbour Gallery and Art Space.

The Tate Gallery St Ives, which opened in June 1993,  is a magnificent building overlooking Porthmeor beach St Ives Cornwall.  The imposing white building with picture windows and impressive staircases is a work of art in itself.  Designed by Eldred Evans and David Shaler who won a competition to design the building with their design in 1990.  At the entrance to the building is a beautiful stained glass window which was designed by Patrick Heron.

The Tate St Ives shows a unique selection of modern and contemporary art with varied and changing exhibitions.  The gallery is family friendly and has the Tate Shop and Tate Cafe.

Sadly Bob Devereux who had run a gallery there since 1979, which had been at the heart of the artists community in St Ives, had to leave due to a new owner taking over the building. The gallery space is now hired out for private exhibitions on a weekly or monthly basis so the art shown will depend on when you visit.
