St Michael's Mount Cornwall

St Michael's Mount Marazion Cornwall

St Michaels Mount Marazion Cornwall

St Michael's Mount Cornwall stands very impressively at Marazion Cornwall and can be seen from around the whole of Mount's Bay. St Michael's Mount is a medieval castle set high on a high craggy Island rising out of the sea in Mount's Bay Cornwall. Woodland and sub tropical gardens surround the castle and there is a small harbour and few houses at the foot of the Mount.

A beautiful cobbled causeway leads from the beach at Marazion to St Michael's Mount which can be walked across from mid to low tide. At high tide the causeway is completely covered and St Michael's Mount becomes an island which can be reached only by boat. Boats do run back and forth from the Mount taking people across for a small fee in Spring, summer and Autumn depending on the sea conditions.

A photographers favourite St Michael's Mount Marazion is stunning with the beach in the foreground, sea and towering Mount, particularly at sunset and is definitely a must see in West Cornwall.

St Michael's Mount Marazion CornwallOnce on the Island you can look around the small harbour, which used to be busy with tin and copper transport and later with china clay, and relax in the cafe or restaurant.

You can visit the castle and the subtropical gardens. The castle and gardens at St Michael's Mount are National trust properties and you need to pay or show your membership card to access these. Dogs are allowed on the Island but are not allowed to enter the National Trust areas.

To visit the castle you climb a cobbled shrub boarded pathway to the castle on St Michael's Mount Cornwall which stands about 230 feet above sea level. You can explore the castle and see the gun batteries and suits of armour from times when the fortress was under siege during the War of the Roses and the Civil War, the plaster frieze in the Chevy Chase room, St Michael's Chair in the Lantern Tower and the lantern cross in the priory church which is built on the summit of the island. There are spectacular views from the castle turrets.

In 1954 Francis St Aubyn gave St Michael's Mount and a large endowment fund, retaining a 999 year lease for the family to live in the castle. The National Trust now preserve and conserve the Mount but the St Aubyn family continue to live in their private family home area within the castle and manage the island as they have done since the 17th century.

Legend has it that history surrounding St Micheal's Mount goes back to a very early date when St Michael the Archangel appeared to a hermit there. Roman coins have also been found at St Michael's Mount suggesting the Mount was known to very early visitors to Britain.

St Michael's Mount Cornwall and Marazion are definitely worth visiting in West Cornwall.
