Boat in Newlyn Harbour Cornwall

Newlyn Cornwall is a busy fishing harbour on the edge of Mount's Bay offering plenty to see and do.

Newlyn is home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the United Kingdom. The bustling harbour of Newlyn Cornwall is a real insight into the life of a true Cornish fishing town. Old streets filled with tiny cottages spill out from Newlyn harbour. As Newlyn is a working fishing harbour there is plenty of activity with boats in and out of the harbour, two fabulous fish shops selling fresh fish, literally straight from the sea, a busy fish market, an auction and seemingly a pub around every corner. There are plenty of places to eat in or buy food to take away, a few shops and galleries, places to stay and of course the Newlyn Gallery which now allows well behaved dogs.

The busy working harbour is overlooked by the words “SAVE OUR FISH” set out in lights, a reminder to us all to make a positive effort to support the local fishing industry and avoid foreign imports. There are plenty of places around Newlyn where you can buy or sample the fish as well as all over Cornwall and Britain. The Newlyn catch is wide from mackerel to deep sea fish such as turbot and hake.

The actual village of Newlyn is a short walk from the harbour. Set aside a stream the village is steeped with history. As with Mousehole, the village of Newlyn was destroyed by the Spanish raid in 1595 when four galleys carrying 200 Spanish soldiers approached and raided. The recently extended and refurbished Newlyn Gallery is near the centre of the village. Newlyn Male Choir gives concerts in and around the village, a pleasure to hear if you get the chance.
