Great idea for a family day out in Cornwall. The pumping engine at Robinson's Shaft is a gloriously well preserved example of a Cornish engine. It worked at this site between 1903 and 1955. The engine was designed by Captain Samuel Grose, a pupil of Richard Trevithick, and was built by Sandys Vivian and Co. at the Copperhouse Foundry, one of the two major engineering works at Hayle. Robinson's Engine stopped working at 1.15pm on 1 May 1955, the last Cornish Engine to work on a Cornish Mine. Robinson's Engine is currently undergoing more restoration work (it's a bit like painting the Forth Bridge), but you can still go on guided tours to see this magnificent engine. Engine House tours are once a day at 12 noon. Please book your space on the tour at the Visitor Centre on arrival at Heartlands. Please note there are only 12 spaces per tour and a small fee applies. One of the interesting things to do in Cornwall for those with an interest in history - The National Maritime Museum in Falmouth is hosting a noon lecture entitled How Europe Saw the World. Join the cartographic historian John Faupel to explore the work of Theodore de Bry, featured in our How Europe Saw the World exhibition. In 1590, this Flemish engraver began illustrating pioneering voyages to America, Africa, Indonesia and the Far East. His finely detailed copperplate engravings were amongst the first ever to illustrate the strange customs and practices of the people they discovered in those distant lands. In this talk, John will focus particularly on the indigenous peoples of North and South America, who had been living there, unknown to the European public. Tickets £7. One of the exciting things to do in Cornwall this half term is explore a castle! St Mawes Castle is among the best-preserved of Henry VIII's coastal artillery fortresses, and the most elaborately decorated of them all. Explore the grounds which stretch down to the waters of the Fal Estuary and enjoy the stunning views out to sea. There are often cruise ships and other vessels which pass through this busy shipping lane. St Mawes Castle is open weekends only until 15th February 2015, thereafter daily from 10 - 4 from 16th to 20th February 2015, then weekends only from 21 February until 29 March 2015. What's on in Cornwall for those who like a varied performance of live music, words and film. Brought to you by Carn to Cove. In the summer of 1850, Wilkie Collins, hoping to make his name as a writer, commenced a walking-for-pleasure tour of Cornwall, which resulted in his book Rambles Beyond Railways. In 2013, Jak Stringer retraced his footsteps, with the aim of bringing stories from his forgotten book alive once more and creating a performance that intertwines the life of Collins with a snapshot of Victorian Cornwall.
